Key Takeaways05
01

MSBT launched April 8 at 0.14% annual expense ratio — the lowest among all US spot Bitcoin ETFs, undercutting BlackRock's IBIT (0.25%), Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (0.15%), and Fidelity's FBTC (0.25%). On $1 million invested, MSBT saves $1,100 per year versus IBIT. Day one: $33.9M inflows, 1.6M shares, 430 BTC purchased

02

Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas placed the debut in the top 1% of all ETF launches over the past year and projected $5 billion AUM in the first year. Morgan Stanley's Head of Digital Asset Strategy Amy Oldenburg called it the firm's best first day of trading for any of its ETFs

03

MSBT is the first spot Bitcoin ETF issued directly by a major US bank. Every prior fund was built by an asset manager — BlackRock, Fidelity, Invesco, VanEck, ARK. Morgan Stanley filed, manages, and distributes MSBT entirely in-house. Coinbase is custodian. BNY Mellon handles cash and administration. The bank is also filing for Ethereum and Solana ETFs and applied for a national trust bank charter for digital asset custody

04

Morgan Stanley's 16,000 advisors manage roughly $6.2 trillion in client assets. In-house product plus lowest fee plus largest advisor distribution network is the structural advantage no asset-manager-issued ETF can replicate. BlackRock's IBIT holds $55B+ and remains the most liquid fund with the deepest options market — different buyer profiles

05

MSBT holds physical Bitcoin tracked to the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark 4 PM NY Settlement Rate. The Bitcoin is held by Coinbase. The holder owns a claim on a chain of intermediaries. There are no private keys anywhere in that chain that belong to the investor

What Happened

On April 8, Morgan Stanley launched MSBT — the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust — on NYSE Arca, becoming the first major US bank to issue its own spot Bitcoin ETF. The 0.14% annual fee is the lowest in the market. Day one inflows reached $33.9 million on 1.6 million shares traded. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Eric Balchunas placed it in the top 1% of all ETF launches over the past year and projected $5 billion in first-year AUM.

In December 2017, a Morgan Stanley analyst published a research note titled Bitcoin Decrypted concluding that Bitcoin's true value could be zero. On April 8, 2026, the same institution launched a physical Bitcoin ETF at the most competitive fee in the market and called it the firm's best first day of trading for any ETF it has issued.

The lowest-fee Bitcoin ETF on the market is still not Bitcoin.

What Makes MSBT Different From Every Prior Bitcoin ETF

Every spot Bitcoin ETF before MSBT was issued by an asset management firm: BlackRock, Fidelity, Invesco, VanEck, ARK 21Shares, Bitwise. Morgan Stanley is a bank. It built, filed, manages, and distributes MSBT entirely under its own name. The bank is not distributing someone else's fund.

That distinction matters for the distribution advantage: 16,000 Morgan Stanley financial advisors now have an in-house product at the lowest fee in the market. Previously they had to recommend a competitor's product. Now the recommendation keeps the fee revenue inside the platform.

The fee compression is real. MSBT at 0.14% undercuts Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (0.15%), Bitwise BITB (0.20%), ARK 21Shares ARKB (0.21%), and both BlackRock IBIT and Fidelity FBTC (0.25%). Bloomberg's Balchunas noted that MSBT's pricing could pressure other issuers to cut fees or risk losing advisor-driven flows.

At $100 million invested, MSBT saves $110,000 per year versus IBIT — a meaningful number for institutional allocators.

◐

What This Means for You

MSBT is the ETF illusion at the lowest price available. The Bitcoin is held by Coinbase inside a Morgan Stanley wrapper inside a brokerage account. You hold a claim on that chain of intermediaries. There are no private keys that belong to you. For price exposure in tax-advantaged accounts, MSBT is the best-priced vehicle currently available. For ownership, it is not Bitcoin.

The institutional infrastructure around Bitcoin is now deeper and more accessible than at any prior point. That changes the market — it brings capital, reduces volatility over time, and makes Bitcoin a standard portfolio allocation. It does not change what means. A correlated institutional product custodied by Coinbase at 0.

14% annually is different from Bitcoin in a you control. Both can be true simultaneously. MSBT is the best ETF in the category and it is still not ownership.

What to Watch

Watch whether BlackRock responds with a fee cut on IBIT. If MSBT's advisor-driven flows begin eroding IBIT market share over the next one to two quarters, BlackRock faces a straightforward choice: defend position with a price cut or accept a smaller slice of new inflows. Watch Morgan Stanley's E*Trade crypto trading launch — expected first half of 2026 — which would put Bitcoin spot trading inside a retail brokerage without an ETF wrapper, creating a different product with different custody implications.
