HARDENED CARRY

Your usual devices can travel, hardened: full-disk encryption, biometrics off at crossings, minimal apps signed in, and clean lock screens.

Before You Leave

criticalFull-disk encryption verified ON for every device that travels (FileVault / BitLocker / Android & iOS default). Encryption only protects a powered-OFF device.
criticalSet a duress word with a trusted contact at home — a normal-sounding phrase that means "I'm under pressure, act accordingly."
highBack up everything that travels, then remove what the trip doesn't need. What isn't on the device can't be read, copied, or compelled.
highOffline + cloud copies of passport, visas, and itineraries — reachable from a browser without your devices.
highStrip the primary phone: remove crypto apps, exchange apps, banking beyond what's needed, and old photo/message archives before departure.
smarteSIM or local data plan purchased in advance — avoid airport SIM kiosks that photograph passports into unknown databases.

At the Border

criticalDevices powered fully OFF before the line — not sleep. Cold-boot state resists forensic extraction and disables biometric unlock.
criticalBiometrics OFF at crossings (use passcode-only). In many jurisdictions a face or fingerprint can be compelled far more easily than a memorized passcode.
highAnswer what's asked, volunteer nothing. You have no obligation to explain your security posture — encrypted devices are normal, not suspicious.
smartFaraday pouch for spare devices in checked or carried luggage — no radios, no silent pairing, no tracking between checkpoints.

In Country

criticalVPN on before any local network. Hotel, café, and airport Wi-Fi are monitored by default.
highNever leave devices unattended in hotel rooms — 'evil maid' access takes minutes. Power off when away; take small devices with you.
smartPay in cash where practical. Every card swipe is a location record tied to your identity.

When You Return

highRotate the passwords of every account you touched while traveling — from a trusted home device, not the travel one.
highTreat travel devices as suspect until reset: back up what you need, then factory-restore before they touch your home network.
smartRe-run your posture check (the Scorecard) — travel is when setups drift.
